LENE GRENAGER

Lene Grenager er cellist og komponist. Hun har skrevet orkesterverk, kammermusikk og soloverk. Som utøvende musiker arbeider hun hovedsakelig med improvisasjon og med det hun benevner som kollektiv komposisjon. Gjennom tre tiår har hennes instrumentale utforsking utgjort hjørnesteinen i ensembler som SPUNK og Lemur. Som solist har hun bygget et materiale og en teknikk som på en enestående måte utforsker celloens klanglige muligheter.

Komposisjonsvirksomheten er bred og omfatter arbeid med ulike notasjonsformer (bl.a. tradisjonell notasjon, grafisk notasjon, broderte partiturer), inkorporering av video, elektronikk og lydfiler. Hun har jobbet med stedspesifike komposisjoner, installasjoner og i samarbeid med dansere og skuespillere. Som cellist har hun gitt ut to soloalbum og har i tillegg medvirket på et 30-tall utgivelser som komponist, musiker og produsent (feks på Unamna som fikk Spellemannpris våren 2023). Hun har skrevet boken Hagearbeid - om frø og kultivering i Lene Grenagers musikk og flere artikler feks i VIS-journal. Fra 2025 er hun ansatt som førsteamanuensis i komposisjon ved Norges Musikkhøgskole.

For sitt arbeid fikk hun i 2018 Arne Nordheims komponistpris.

Lene Grenager is cellist and composer. She has written orchestral works, chamber music and solo works. As a performing musician, she mainly works with improvisation and with what she calls collective composition. Over three decades her instrumental investigations have formed a cornerstone in her ensembles SPUNK and LEMUR, further developed and extended in her solo practice. Her trademark is a unique control of the cello's timbral possibilities.

Her composition activity is broad and includes work with various forms of notation (including traditional notation, graphic notation, embroidered scores), incorporation of video, electronics and sound files. She has worked with site-specific compositions, installations and in collaboration with dancers and actors. As a cellist, she has released two solo albums and has also contributed to around 30 releases as a composer, musician and producer (e.g. on Unamna, which received the Spellemannpris in spring 2023). She has written the book Hagearbeid - om frø og kultivering i Lene Grenagers musikk and several articles, for example, in VIS-journal. From 2025 she is Associate professor in composition at the Norwegian Academy of Music in Oslo.

For her work, she was awarded the Arne Nordheim composer's prize in 2018.
